The notion that an organization has a single identity has been taken for granted in modern society. However, it is not easy to identify an organizational identity due to the nature of an ever-increasing, complex environment. Thus, the concept of organizational identity has emerged as an appealing topic in organization studies. Many argue organizational identities can be multiple and fluid; moreover, these identities might be products of interaction among various stakeholders. Nevertheless, empirical studies tend to exclusively focus on organizational members. In this regard, this study aims to consider the roles of outside stakeholders, as well as organizational members, in order to provide an explanation on how organizational identities are formulated. In addition, we name four identity narratives of the NACF, which are incompetence, maladaptation, scapegoat, and greed. The inclusion, and exclusion, of concepts and events are the key mechanism which composes identity narratives. Although there can be as many narratives of organizational identity as participants, only a few identity narratives are identified, for an individual autonomy is limited by the complex relations between various people and texts. The research findings illustrate organizational identities are neither the essence which an organization holds, nor are they the cognitive frame which organizational members share. Organizational identities are built through conflict of interests. The contribution of this study is to propose that organizational identity researchers need to focus on the relations between people and texts rather than the intentions of individuals or the intrinsic meanings of texts. In addition, this study suggests a need to create linguistic strategies to coordinate differences of interests.
