This paper seeks to suggest Reformed Theological perspective of Ancient Near East(ANE) studies for the historical interpretation of the Old Testament. Even though ANE studies have only 150 years of history, they have caused many controversies in relation to the Old Testament study. The debates of Friedrich Delitzsch(1850-1922), Keith W. Whitleam, Peter Enns over the relationship between the Old Testament and ANE have demonstrated the importance of the view of Scripture in dealing with ANE materials. In oder to approach ANE studies from the perspective of Reformed Theology, he or she has to understand the authority and organic inspiration of Scripture. Organic inspiration of Scripture emphasizes both divine and human author. As the theory suggests, to comprehend the historical, cultural, linguistic, and religious background of the world where the biblical author lived is an necessary process for the historical interpretation of the Old Testament. In this process ANE studies will certainly play a key role in perceiving the religious and social background of the author of Scripture. The interpreter should have holistic understanding of the theological, historical, and literary features of the Old Testament text because the method of the historical interpretation depends upon the interpreter’s viewpoint of the text. And the outcomes from ANE studies should be employed under the following principles and guidelines. First, we should acknowledge the contribution and limitation of archaeological studies to the Old Testament interpretation. As we analyse archaeological materials, we also should stand on the our confessional beliefs such as authority and uniqueness of the Old Testament as God’s revelation. We should also critically analyse a wide range of information from ANE studies and 이희성 | 개혁신학과 고대 근동 연구: 구약의 역사적 해석 원리에 대한 고찰 61 영문초록evaluate it objectively and apply it carefully to exegesis, and furthermore defend the historicity of the biblical text. Second, through comparative studies we should be able to consider the similarities and differences between the Bible and ANE. There are similarities because the Old Testament authors lived in the historical and literary environment of ANE. However, there are differences because Israelites as God’s covenant people had their unique religion and world view that are different from the surrounding nations. The comparative studies should focus on not only individual features of the material but also conceptual issues such as world view, cultural dynamics, and literary genres. The interpreter should carefully evaluate all pieces of ANE information and use in the process of interpretation to determine the original meaning of the biblical text which is unique and authoritative.
