In previous studies that examined Yeon Nam-saeng’s surrender and its aftermath, presented were only two kinds of understanding of the fact that written records show no sign of the Dang forces attacking Goguryeo fortresses in the Laiodung peninsula, since Yeon’s surrender till the fall of Goguryeo. Some studies just assumed that the fortresses would have been obliterated when the Dang forces swarmed in for the first time. Others speculated that with Yeon’s surrender, the Guknae-seong fortress area -which was also his base of power- would have been immediately abused as a platform for Dang forces’ entry into the Pyeong’yang area.
Considering the ancient Chinese historians’ tendency of exaggerating their own achievements and at the same time hiding rather shameful ones, possibility of the first assumption being true is remote. Meanwhile, the second conjecture lacks detailed analysis of the situation, which is unfortunate as the situation may have had something to do with the fact that the initial frontline maintained by the Goguryeo force was indeed retreating as time went on and neared the fall of the dynasty(668).
The most probable variable that may have factored into the situation must have been the sudden availability of a certain route that would allow the Dang forces to launch a direct assault on the Ogol-seong fortress. The Dang forces had already favored this route back in 645, but during that conflict both parties -on the Liaodung peninsula, the Guknae-seong area and the Soja-ha river basin-were suppressing each other from either using or securing that route. So it was impossible for the Dang forces to use that route back then, but now in the 660s the Dang forces were able to exploit it.
Interestingly, as a result of all this, after the dynasty’s fall the Goguryeo troops in the Liaodung peninsula effectively turned into a refugee army which Dang had to deal with, and the situation was further complicated by the movements in Tibet. All this distraction allowed Shilla to have some precious time to secure the late Baekje’s old territory, in the middle of a war with Dang no less. In retrospect, the surrender of Yeon Nam-saeng not only led to the fall of Goguryeo, but also tied into the Goguryeo Resurrection movement, and even the course of the Shilla-Dang war.
