Traditionally, a friendship has been based on identity. Friend is the second me, so I could enjoy the best friendship when I and my friends are indistinguishable. But is it true that only people like me can be friends? Rather, we experience our friend as the first other person, and we tend to experience the person as a foreign entity different from ourselves. So the discourse on friendship requires a different perspective. It means that friends acknowledge the differences, and intervene in the change of knowledge or the friend (other). This change is to acknowledge the diversity of reality of the friend (other) and to accept that there may be various ways of understanding the reality of the friend (other). It is a pluralistic friendship. This pluralistic friendship is different from friendship based on identity. In other words, it is ‘dissident friendship’. Because it welcomes a stranger, it can be called ‘Epicurean philoxenia’ and ‘guest friendship’.
