In order to correctly recognize environmental issues such as global warming, scientific understanding needs be the basis. In this study, middle school students at local level gifted education institute were asked to solve the problem of sea level change from global warming when icebergs melt in the POE method, and the their scientific reasoning patterns were categorized. As a result of the analysis, students’ scientific reasoning patterns could be categorized into five types. The first type was that predictions, observations, and explanations were all scientifically appropriate, so students’ predictions and arguments were made into scientific explanations through observational evidence. The second type was the case of corroborating the wrong argument because the observational evidence supported the expectation which came from the wrong argument. The third type was a case where cognitive conflict was caused by difference between predictions and observations, and scientific conceptual changes occurred. The fourth type was a case in which the predictions and observations were different, but this result was explained as a non-scientific conceptions, and no change to a scientific conceptions occurred despite cognitive conflict. The fifth type was a case where the explanation did not change by supporting false predictions through false evidence. Educational implications for environmental education were discussed.
