This paper investigates some impoliteness styles and aspects of Kiswahili religious discourses in Tanzania. It focuses on Christian church sermons delivered in Kiswahili language. Specifically, the paper focuses on sermons delivered by Daniel Mgogo, one of the lead clerics from Tanzania whose sermons to his congregation trigger a lot of humor and consequently laughter. The paper uses the impoliteness model proposed by Culpeper (1996) and the Benign Violation Theory encapsulated by McGraw and Warren (2010) as a theory that informs its analysis. Data for this study were live recorded audio sermons and unedited and unscripted videos accessed through Mgogo’s YouTube channel. It is evident from this study that some Christian discourses use impoliteness strategies as explained by Culpeper (1996) to communicate some sensitive information to the members of their congregation. A myriad of impoliteness strategies in Mgogo’s sermons are used to redress immoral acts among the members of his congregation. The negative impoliteness strategy is predominantly used in religious sermons and is mostly realized through ridicule which is a vital social function of correcting immoral behavior among people in the society. Besides the positive and negative impoliteness strategies, bald on record impoliteness is also used. The humor strategies and consequently laughter function as some kind of reinforcement to the intended impoliteness.
