The consciousness of the end of the Goryeo Dynasty is created from a sense of social despair and a sense of escape. Individuals respond to the last days with their religion or belief. The state responded to the consciousness of the last days as an institution and politics. Famine was the biggest threat to the survival of the Goryeo Dynasty. In particular, famines occurred frequently during the reign of King Gongmin(恭愍). The famine caused social despair. However, the state"s response caused political dissatisfaction. The consciousness of the last days was born out of these people"s dissatisfaction.
The Goryeo dynasty enjoyed peace for a long time after being subjugated to the Won dynasty. However, China"s Honggeonjeok(紅巾賊) and Japanese pirates(倭寇) appeared. The war brought distrust of the government and threatened the survival of the people. The war also disintegrated families and made agricultural production difficult.
The ritual of the last days of the Goryeo Dynasty appeared as Maitreya(彌勒) faith. In the Buddhist world, the sense of crisis that Buddhism must be preserved has grown. Confucian intellectuals argued that moral writing was necessary. The general public expected Maitreya Buddha. Also, the lower classes tried to kill the slave"s owner by stealing.
End-time rites have generally appeared as rumors. In particular, rumors were popular in relation to China. The legend of Shindon(辛旽) and Bulgasali is a story of hope for the reform of the people of the time. The rituals of the last days show people"s social anxiety and hope well.
