The purpose of this paper is to discuss the necessity of teaching English as an international language (TEIL) in a military domain for international military communication by exploring how it can be incorporated into the English language curriculum of the Korea Military Academy (KMA). The paper first examines the current English language curriculum in the KMA and its limitations in terms of the use of English in international military contexts. Then, it demonstrates how the implementation of TEIL would allow the KMA’s curriculum to overcome its limitations. Lastly, the paper suggests four pedagogical ways to implement TEIL in the KMA that include WE/EIL activities, WE/EIL course, extracurricular WE/EIL activities, and intercultural content in the Military English course. In conclusion, the paper argues the importance of TEIL for both English proficiency and intercultural communicative competence to communicate with interlocutors from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds in international military contexts.
