It thesis aims to study on the relation of modern surveillance society and visual. Human visual is divided into two types depending on way of seeing. The eye on the subjective aspect is called eye and the eye as an object is called gaze. Foucault interprets visual in connection with power, in that is those who see are those who have power, and those who are stared are those who are subjugated to power. And the object of staring control oneself and internalize disciplines in the consciousness that someone is staring. Foucault, in particular, pointed out that modern society is realizing surveillance and discipline through the model called Panopticon. Panopticon"s staring of invisible power shakes the visual field of the subject to cause anxiety and internalizes power to such an extent that the subject of prisoner becomes one’s own watchdog. This is the principle of CCTV today, and most modern countries are installing CCTVs for safety purposes, but it is monitoring us in real time. If the mechanism of CCTV is a staring, today information from devices connected to the network, such as the Internet and web portals, replaces it. Thanks to these electronic media devices, we have established the surveillance society that extend the staring by mechanical devices from direct staring system between people. Today, we’re living in the democratic era, but the insensitivity that unable recognize the reality of crisis that continuously monitoring individuals’ behaviors is deepening. Humans are forced to be constantly subordinated to power in the panopticon system that spreads in all direction along with the development of industrial civilization. Therefore, while living in modern society, we should search the possibility of liberation from power than fantasy that technological development will bring, and seek what is the subjective life.

본 논문은 현대 감시 사회와 시각의 관계에 관한 연구를 목적으로 한다. 인간의 시각은 보는 방식에 의해 두 가지로 나뉜다. 이때 주체적 측면의 눈을 시선이라고 하고, 대상으로서의 눈을 응시라고 한다. 푸코는 시각을 권력과 연계하여 해석하는데, 바라보는 자가 권력을 가진 자이고 응시된 자는 권력에 예속된 자이다. 그리고 그 응시의 대상은 누군가가 바라보고 있다는 의식 속에서 자신을 통제하고 규율을 내재화 한다. 특히 푸코는 판옵티콘이라는 모형을 통해 근대 사회가 응시를 통한 감시와 규율화를 실현하고 있다고 지적했다. 판옵티콘의 보이지 않는 권력의 응시는 주체의 시각 장을 흔들어 불안감이 일어나도록 하며, 수감자의 주체가 스스로의 감시자가 될 정도로 권력을 내재화 한다. 이것이 오늘날 CCTV의 원리인데 현대의 대부분 국가에서는 CCTV를 안전을 목적으로 설치하고 있지만 그것이 우리를 실시간으로 감시하고 있다. CCTV의 기제가 시선이라면 오늘날에는 인터넷, 포털 사이트 등 네트워크에 연결된 기기의 정보가 그것을 대신한다. 이러한 전자 미디어 장치 덕분에 우리는 사람들 간의 직접적인 응시 체계에서 기계 장치에 의해 응시를 확장하는 감시사회를 구축하게 되었다. 오늘날 우리는 민주주의 시대에 살지만, 개인의 행동이 끊임없이 감시되는 위기의 현실을 인식하지 못하는 불감증이 심화되어 가고 있다. 산업문명의 발전과 함께 전 방위적으로 확산되는 판옵티콘적 체제 속에서 인간은 끊임없이 권력에 종속될 수밖에 없다. 따라서 우리는 현대사회에 살면서 기술 발전이 가져다 줄 환상보다는 권력으로부터의 해방 가능성을 탐색하고, 주체적인 삶이 무엇인지에 대해 모색해봐야 한다.
