This study identified the mediating effects of self-soothing ability and mindfulness on the relation between the self-efficacy of counselors and the vicarious trauma. For this purpose, the survey including scales of self-efficacy, self-soothing, mindfulness and vicarious trauma was conducted targeting 391 counselors(male: 67, female: 324) who were likely to experience or be exposed to vicarious trauma. The results of this study, which adopts the structural equation model for the analysis, are as follows. First, vicarious trauma showed significantly negative correlations with self-efficacy, self-soothing ability, and mindfulness respectively. Meanwhile, it had significantly positive correlations with self-efficacy, self-soothing ability, and mindfulness. Second, both self-soothing ability and mindfulness showed mediating effects significantly on the relation between self-efficacy and vicarious trauma. Third, self-soothing ability and mindfulness showed a double-mediated effect, which they mediated sequentially between self-efficacy and vicarious trauma. As a result, higher self-efficacy leads to higher self-soothing ability, and it improved mindfulness capacity. Finally, the improved mindfulness decreases the effects of vicarious trauma. Based on the results, the significance and limits of this study were suggested and the necessity of further study was also discussed.
