Social distancing following the outbreak of COVID-19 has resulted in diminishing the physical movement and social networks among the elderly. The decreasing social interaction within the network has affected the elderly’s satisfaction with their social network, resulting in decreased overall life satisfaction. Therefore, using data after the outbreak of COVID-19, we examined the elderly’s family and community satisfaction and overall life satisfaction, and investigated the effect of these satisfactions on overall life satisfaction. In order to consider the importance of awareness of community safety in the context of a pandemic, this study divided the elderly into two groups: a group with a high degree and a group with a low degree of awareness of community safety. We enrolled 4,779 married elderly people over 65 years from the 2020 Jeollabuk-do Social Survey to explore the effect of the elderly’s family relationships and community satisfaction on overall life satisfaction. Analysis was achieved by applying t-test and multiple regression. Our results suggest that satisfaction with the social network varies according to the degree of awareness of community safety from COVID-19, and differences were obtained in the factors affecting the life satisfaction of each group. These findings show the need to consider the level of awareness of community safety when discussing the life satisfaction of the elderly in the post-corona era. In addition, our results stress that satisfaction with the community in which the elderly resides is a vital factor for the life satisfaction of the elderly.
