Skeletal muscle is the largest organ in the human body, comprising about 40% of the body weight. The prolonged periods of skeletal muscle inactivity due to bed rest, denervation, hindlimb unloading, or immobilization can result in significant muscle atrophy. It is characterized by decreased muscle fiber cross-sectional area and altered proteins. Apoptosis is known to contribute to disuse-induced skeletal muscle atrophy. Chengshan(BL57) on the lower leg is one of the most frequently used point in acupressure and acupuncture. In this study, the hypothesis that the acupressure at Chengshan could attenuate immobilization-induced skeletal muscle atrophy was tested.
Thirty male Sprague Dawley Rats were divided into 3 groups: Normal(n=10), Control(n=10). AP (acupressure)(n=10). The left hindlimb immobilization was performed with casting tape in both Control group and AP group. The Rats in AP group were daily treated with pressure needle at the accupoint of Chengshan. After 2 weeks, the weight, cross sectional aera of left soleus muscle were assessed. The changes of apoptosis related proteins were observed.
In results, AP group significantly ameliorated the reductions of the muscle weight and cross sectional area induced by immobilization. Moreover, BAX immunoreactivities was decreased and Bcl-2 was increased as compared with Control group. Theses results suggest that acupressure at Chengshan has the protective effects against disuse muscle atrophy by modulating BAX/Bcl-2 proteins in soleus muscle.
