The major purpose of this study is to investigate how vocational traing programs for spinal cord injury(SCI) victims are to be organized and delivered. SCI victims, generally acquired their physical chllenges congenitally and suffered for severe disabilities, have not been one of the active participants in vocational services in Korea. However, abundance evidences advocate the importance of return to work for SCI victims, but also suggest particular difficulties associated with interventions for it. Some of those difficulties are rooted from common characteristics of acquired disabilities, yet others’ are indigenous to SCI. This study, based on the findings both from literatures on acquired disability and on SCIs, aims to suggest possible solutions and implications to improve SCI victims.
Specifically, among various areas and modules consisting vocational services for the disabled, this study performed investigation focusing on vocational training as a core activities for SCI victim’s return to work. In order to achieve research objectives, we conducted one survey and two interview studies to obtain firsthand knowledge on the research problem.
Major implications from this study is as follows: 1) Activities of Daily Living(ADL) training can be a key component for vocational trainig for SCI victims; 2) more SCI victim-accessible vocational training programs ard needed, for example, introductory, preparatory course a prior to full-scale vocational skills training programs can be helpful; 3) exclusive training facilities for SCI victims can be considered for more effective services rendering; 4) for the vocational training for SCI victims, standard job skills enhancement curriculum may be less suitable, rather programs should concentrate on competency building aiding their return to work; 5) there are needs to develop jobs customized for SCI victims’ job related abilities and requirements.
