This study examines the aspects of the alternation of the centripetal force of the testimony and fictional imagination, the layer of a memory community, and the reconstruction of memory contents with Soom Kim’s One Person and A Flowing Letter of comfort women’s novels as texts. What the two novels pay attention to and emphasize is not a life that allows various perceptions and interpretations but a body on which sensations and their traces are carved. Since damage to an individual’s dignity intersects the effort to maintain it, the comfort women’s bodies float between being and non-being, and due to the relationships that manipulated the comfort women’s bodies as these characteristics, the relationship between the comfort women and the world is also repetitively reified. After liberation, the external world like blood ties and neighbors, etc. would gain their interests by continuously making comfort women floating individuals while the comfort women substitute and internalize the demands of the outside world with feelings like shame. However, the narration of the two novels takes the aspects of awakening or changing of the comfort women sandwiched in between being and non-being as a frame. What create a grain accumulated with affects through awakening and change, in other words, new relationship and space are very small and trivial events. This event contributes to individuating and regrouping the individual’s body bound in the collective layer of the national community and creates new possibilities for the future. The two texts would secure a medium to connect the victimness that may be subjective or specific with the universal and self-reflecting ethics of others through reconstructing the layer of a memory community.
