Despite a rapid increase in research on the effects of smartphones, the differential relationships between distinct smartphone-related variables and life satisfaction have been seldom investigated empirically. This three-wave longitudinal study was conducted to expand the understanding of differential associations between communicative smartphone use, non-communicative use, smartphone dependency, and life satisfaction. Specifically, this study examined a developmental trajectory of life satisfaction using hierarchical linear modeling (HLM), and communicative smartphone use, non-communicative smartphone use, and smartphone dependency were analyzed as the predictors of life satisfaction. The data of 1,564 adolescents who own smartphones?eighth-graders in 2014 to tenth-graders in 2016?from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) were analyzed. The HLM analysis revealed that communicative smartphone use was positively related to life satisfaction. In contrast, the associations of non-communicative use were not significant, and smartphone dependency was negatively related to life satisfaction. These findings suggest that intervention efforts should be tailored to the differential effects of smartphone-related predictors to promote adolescent life satisfaction.
