This study reviewed the maritime pollution, and conducted a literature study on the background of the IMO and MARPOL. Furthermore, after considering regulations such as EEDI, SEEMP, Convention on Ballast Water Management, and IMO 2020, analyzed the current situation and trends to explore countermeasures to be pursued by the domestic shipping and shipbuilding industries. As a response to IMO 2020, each of the three options(low sulfur oil/ scrubbers/LNG propulsion ships) varies. This is because all three countermeasures have pros and cons, and considering each company's economic situation and management strategy, There is no uniform judgment that either response is the answer. Strategies that can comprehensively cover industries and utilize environmental regulations as a blessing in disguise should be continuously sought. The regulation will have a significant impact on both international trade and business, including global supply chains. Given the implementation and introduction of environmental regulations with significant social impact, it would be an essential strategy for future survival to promote differentiation through increased responsiveness that took advantage of them.
