This study investigated the co-evolution of friendship networks and bullying behaviors in a longitudinal sample of elementary school students with the goal of simultaneously assessing selection and influence processes using Stochastic Actor-Based Models. These models provide advantages over conventional approaches due to their ability to account for inherent dependencies between individuals embedded in a social network and model interdependencies between network and behavioral dynamics. Participants were fifth and sixth graders from 28 elementary school classrooms (N=736, 52% girls at wave 1, N=659, 52% girls at wave 2) followed from fall to spring within one academic year. Findings suggest influence process play a substantive role in the observed dynamics of bullying behaviors. Further, selection for peers who get involve in bullying behaviors was stronger for boys compared to girls, and 6th graders showed more increase in the level of bullying behaviors than 5th graders over time.
