This study explores the effectiveness of the PBL(Problem Based Learning) method in a Chinese language learning class. The current research takes place in a Chinese language course called ‘Chinese Translation Practice’ in a South Korean college. In order to enhance the level of participation and concentration of the students, the PBL method was introduced. After the class, a survey with five questions was given to the participants in order to illuminate quantitative findings. The results are as follows.
First, bidirectional communication between the teacher and students participating in group activities made the classroom atmosphere more convivial, and bilateral cooperation resulted in significant improvement of the rigid and one-sided classroom atmosphere of the previous lectures.
Second, the students were able to acquire basic knowledge of the intermediate-level. Chinese language through the process of finding Chinese words and studying core grammar.
Third, the participants as members of group activities, were able to carry out self-directed learning while performing their respective roles.
Fourth, while translating lines in Chinese movies, lyrics of songs, modern poetry, and modern essays, the students were able to solve the problem of translation based on their own creative ideas, and through this, they were able to improve their creativity.
Fifth, the ability to organize and present ideas has greatly improved among the students while taking part in revising activities as a part of group activities.
Thus, this study offers a pedagogical application of PBL on teaching Chinese language for Korean college students.
