From the perspective of historical language, ‘遍’ can be said to be a word that has undergone various changes and developments from the Pre-Qin Dynasty. In particular, textbooks published in China and Korea, which address modern Chinese, also deal with the use of measure word and adjective, and especially, for adjective, sentences about the use of ‘遍’ for the complement of result in the form of ‘V+遍’ appear from time to time.
Then, how was the use of ‘遍’ from the perspective of historical language? Also, how was the use of ‘parts of speech’ in each era? This paper attempted to analyze it on the topic of how was the use of ‘遍’ in the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties during the modern Chinese period. ‘遍’ has been constantly changing and transforming, while serving as a verb, adverb, adjective and measure word in the ancient, middle and modern Chinese periods, and as an adjective, measure word and complement of result in the present. In addition, there are a variety of words and idioms using the meaning of ‘遍’.
It is clear that the structure ‘V + 遍’ is different from ‘完’, ‘好’ and ‘到’, which often appear as the complement of result in modern Chinese textbooks. From a Korean point of view, the structure ‘V + 遍’ can be seen as an adverb ‘두루 (throughout)’, or an adjective ‘모두 (all)’ depending on the sentence, or otherwise it may be natural not to translate it. I hope this study will be a useful supplementary explanation in describing ‘遍’, such as‘走遍’, ‘看遍’, and ‘吃遍’.
