This study examines the tabernacle, the priests, Israel, the priestly law, and the relationship between them. In the priestly law and the holiness law, the tabernacle is the ‘exclusive central sanctuary’. Worship in other places is not permitted. The most powerful reason that the tabernacle of the priestly code is the ‘exclusive central sanctuary’ is the story background that this tabernacle is a place where Yahweh is directly present and dwells. This story background is the reason why the priestly law commands Israel to always worship Yahweh in the central sanctuary. Next, the priestly law and the holiness law emphasize the role of the priest. Only the priests could officiate the sacrifices. Compared to other religious practices in the ancient Near East, a notable difference is that the priestly law pays much attention to the way priests deals with the uncleanness of the altar and the tabernacle by blood. The blood of the sacrifice could only be handled by the priest, and this ‘indexes’ the privileges of the priest. In particular, being able to approach every corner of the tabernacle with blood and purify the contaminated parts reveals the priests’ closer relationship with the tabernacle than the non-priests. With this exegetical study in mind, this study finally, though briefly, discusses in its conclusion what and how the Bible and biblical studies can say about some of the recent tendencies to avoid the institutional church.
