As career opportunities increase globally, English for career preparation is in great demand. However, opportunities have been limited for beginner EFL learners due to their insufficient English proficiency. This study aims to serve beginner college EFL learners by providing an effective collaborative teaching design and practice, making part of the Business English content accessible for them in the broad realm of ESP. For this, a five-week Business English session was embedded into a 15-week general education course for career preparation, where students first performed tasks such as writing resumes and cover letters in Korean, and then completed similar tasks in English. Findings from students’ assignments show that students’ L2 proficiency improved both in language and content. Students reported that they were able to complete tasks with the help of L1. They also perceived increased proficiency, confidence and employability after the course. This indicates that L1-L2 sequential co-teaching facilitated students to easily adapt to the Business English content, addressing their real-world needs for employment. The implication of this study is that L1-L2 sequential co-teaching, contingent on how it is designed and practiced, can scaffold beginner EFL learners to more advanced English. Securing more participants for data reliability is encouraged in future studies.
