Christianity taught the charity as the most important duty of believers. Christians who themselves were poor fasted 2-3 days a week to collect money for this duty. Even some sold themselves into slave to feed those who were troubled by starvation. Because all believers offered much possessions as charity, Christian churches collected vast charity funds and helped the poor. We must not see the Christian charity only as a peculiar attitude of religious people. It has a great historical meaning. It broke down the civil ethics of Romans and provided new principle for unification of all people regardless of nations or classes. There was a great fault between citizens and non-citizens in ancient times. When Greeks and Romans gave some money or foods to the others, only those who had the citizenship could be received them. Furthermore those who gave something to another had strong expectations to get back later. But Christians didn’t have such attitude. Furthermore what matters is not citizen or non citizen but the rich or the poor. The rich had the responsibility to help the poor for nothing. And charity could be given to all people regardless of citizenship. It is just this ‘universalism’ of Christianity that many pagans were fascinated to Christianity. The saying of Julian, the apostate, “These godless Galileans feed not only their own poor but ours. Our poor lack our care.” demonstrated it.
