This paper confirms the tales in the anthology that served as the basis for Chapter 11, “Tairiki Monogatari,” of Kousyoku Monogatari and compares the contents and format of related tales with “Tairiki Monogatari” to identify patterns of acceptance that occurred prominently in the process of turning folktales into a novel. When contrasting the contents of Kikuchi’s “Tairiki Monogatari” with the tales in the collection of folk tales, we cannot help but pay attention to the concept of ‘kousyoku ‘sensuality’ in Kousyoku Monogatari . In other words, the powerful men and women merchants and the incidents related to them that appear in “Tairiki Monogatari” cannot be considered appropriate for the title of the work, particularly the Kousyoku ‘sensuality’ of Kousyoku Monogatari . This is because the main content and theme of the tales included in the collection is ‘kairiki ‘strength’ and not kousyoku ‘sensuality.’ This paper seeks to reveal how Kikuchi Kan modified the contents of “Tairiki Monogatari” to suit his taste for kousyoku ‘sensuality’ in Kousyoku Monogatari.
