The arts, which started from depiction of nature in the past plays an important role in linking nature with humanity and high technology civilization in the form of new media art combined with digital technology of today. Representation is considered to be dismantled because of tendency of abstraction of contemporary art, but it is also an important concept that requires continuous discussion as a prototype and style of art. In the traditional art that centered on painting, representation, an act that imitates reality, extends its form and range in new media art. This is due to the characteristics of new media art based on digital technology, such as expansion of time and space, virtuality and complex use of media. Therefore, this study examines the meaning of the representation of new media art in the aspect of art history and presents the direction of discussion. In addition, to analyze the new media art to be reproduced, it is divided into representation of appearance focusing on reproduction of figure, representation of phenomenon that depicts change with time and, representation of experience including interaction with audience. This paper tries to derive the universal characteristic of representation through analysis that relates its method and meaning of work. The reason for limiting the object of representation to nature is that it is valid as a basis for analyzing the characteristics of representation in new media art which is separate from the traditional art. Representation in new media art is evolving beyond the imitation of reality, and continuous research is needed as a concept that must be reconsidered in the art of the cataclysm.
