The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between global urban system in glocal era and synchronic gallery pursuing spatial experience. Preceding studies on museums tended to investigate the ideological aspects inherent in exhibition system with a focus on the connectivity with the power of the state. However, this study was intended to focus on the increased importance of cities that had been overlooked by previous studies on state-based museums amid globalization concurrent with localization in the latter part of the 20th century and to look into the patterns in which museums dealing with contemporary fine arts were being transformed into a synchronic museums in the midst of shift towards global urban system where international borders were being weakened. The subjects of this study were the Spain-based Museo Guggenheim Bilbao and London-based Tate Modern Museum, which were the most typical synchronic museums built newly in the period spanning from late 1990s to early 21st century. Those museums were analyzed based on artistic and sociological approach to glolocalization and urban study, along with institutional criticism of museums. The phenomenological subject model, pursued by minimalism, led to convergence between demands of urban tourism industry aiming to promote experiences that could be gained in individual cities under global urban system and synchronic museums aiming to evolve into a huge scale. Under those circumstances, urban governments in the glocal era have planned the museums as strategic media that can be leveraged for urban branding, and in the process, the spectacular experiences gained during urban tours were found to be being combined seamlessly with designs of museums serving as landmarks. Such emergence of urban management led by owners of corporations fits well into the principle of experiential economy that sells the experiences, further spurring the shift of synchronic museums towards larger scale, while serving as a network for establishment of branches of museums which connect the cities around the globe. Thus, the study on museums in glocal era would need to place the focus of analyses more precisely on the patterns and functionalities of convergence of museum cultures from economic and aesthetic perspective within global urban system in the period ahead.
