In the second volume of “Shasekishu” written by Muju, there is an item titled “The person who obtained the bones of Buddha.” A HIJIRI-lowest-ranking monk -named SYOREN appears in this item. He had a strong desire to obtain the bones of Buddha.
He had a strange dream and received the bones of Buddha from a young prostitute who was sleeping next to him. Previous research has left it unclear about him.
Only TAHAHASHI Syuei has written a paper on him. He stated that SYOREN was a contemporary of CHOGEN, EIZAI,KAIKEI, and others, and a disciple of DOGEN. I agree that he was a contemporary of CHOGEN and others. However, he was not a disciple of Dogen. This is because DOGEN was cautious about worshiping the bones of Buddha. In 1186, Chogen and his party visited ISE GRAND SHRINES. KEISYUN, a priest at Todaiji Temple, has left a detailed record of this visit. At the end of this record, a lowest-ranking monk named SYOREN appears. He received a lucky dream that the visit of CHOGEN and his party was a great success. He was a disciple of CHOGEN, who had a strong worshiping the bones of Buddha, and it is believed that he, as a disciple, had a similar worshiping. From these two perspectives, dreaming and the worshiping the Buddha"s bones, I believe that the SYOREN in the “Shasekishu”and the Seiren who was CHOGEN"s disciple are the same person.
