This study applies Rosemary Jackson’s ‘Paraxis’ concept to the analysis of animation, revealing the fluid boundaries between reality and fantasy. It argues that fantasy serves not merely as an escape but as a profound means of social and psychological exploration. Initially, the study provides an understanding of the ‘Paraxis’ concept, traditionally used in literary criticism, alongside a general comprehension of the “realism and fantasy” in animation. By applying the Paraxis concept to Hayao Miyazaki’s animation Spirited Away, it examines how scenes classified as “Ghost Zones” reflect the interaction and boundaries between reality and fantasy, mirroring the complexities of contemporary society and the human psyche. Through a literature review of Miyazaki’s methodologies, the research identifies how the author transforms observations and experiences from the real world into fantastical elements within his films, creating a virtual world that is both fantastical and realistic. The study explores how the fantastical elements embedded in his animations reflect and critique the social structures and values of the real world, and how they provoke reflection on various cultural, social, and psychological themes among the audience. 본 연구는 로즈메리 잭슨의 점근축 개념을 애니메이션 분석에 적용하여 현실과 환상 사이의 유동적 경계를 드러내며, 환상이 단순한 탈출구가 아닌 깊은 사회적, 심리적 탐구의 수단으로 기능함을 논증한다. 먼저 문학비평 등에 사용되었던 ‘점근축’ 개념에 대한 이해와 애니메이션이 갖는 ‘현실성과 환상성’에 대한 일반적 이해를 배경으로, 미야자키 하야오의 애니메이션 <센과 치히로의 행방불명（Spirited Away）>에 점근축 개념을 적용해 봄으로써 ‘유령영역’으로 분류할 수 있는 장면들이 어떻게 현실과 환상의 상호작용 및 그 경계를 이루며, 현대 사회와 인간 내면의 복잡성을 반영하고 있는지 살펴본다. 미야자키 하야오의 작업 방식에 대한 문헌 연구를 통해 작가가 현실 세계의 관찰과 경험을 영화 속 환상 요소로 변환하여, 환상적이면서도 현실적인 가상 세계를 창조하는 방법론을 파악하고, 그가 작품속에 심어놓은 애니메이션 속 환상적 요소들이 어떻게 현실 세계의 사회 구조와 가치관을 반영하며 동시에 비판하는지, 또한 관객에게 다양한 문화적, 사회적, 심리적 주제에 대한 성찰을 유도하는지 살펴본다. 그 과정에서 ‘점근축’ 개념이 이야기하는 유령영역은 그 작품 속에서 어떻게 자리잡고 있으며 또한 그 시각적 및 서사적 요소들은 어떻게 현실과 환상의 경계에서 상호작용하는지를 분석함으로써, <센과 치히로의 행방불명>이 단순한 판타지를 넘어 현대 사회와 인간 정신의 복잡한 층위를 깊게 탐구하는 작품임을 드러낸다. 점근축 개념을 중심으로 한 유령영역에 대한 탐구는 현실 세계의 문제를 다른 시각에서 바라볼 수 있는 새로운 가능성을 제시하며 현실과 환상의 관계를 이해하는 데 새로운 관점을 제공한다.
