In this paper, we examine the attributes and characteristics of military interpretation and translation, which can be considered as the foundation of their research and as a qualification required for military interpreters and translators. As a medium of military interpretation and translation, military foreign language is a foreign language with specific purposes. Military discourse, as a means of communication for a special group called Soldiers, is the object of military interpretation and translation, showing its characteristics as a distinct institutional discourse more than anything else. Military discourse, in the form of text, refrains from emotional expression as much as possible and is characterized by its concise and compressed form. In addition, it does not allow multiple interpretations, places importance on conveying clear meaning, and requires that not only the content but also the format of the original text be kept as identical to the original text format as possible. Lastly, special types of vocabulary, such as military-specific jargon, abbreviations, and clichés, are often used. Therefore, it is very important for military interpreters and translators to be familiar with special military vocabulary and find the appropriate equivalents. Military interpreters and translators are required to have work ethics and qualifications that are different from those generally required. Due to the nature of the military organization, interpretation and translation are considered as missions that must be performed, requiring additional qualifications to execute the mission. Therefore, on top of the lingual expertise such as interpretation and translation skills, one must be patriotic, sacrificial, and highly motivated to protect national interests and secrets. Additionally, military interpreters need to fully understand that they are members of a military organization that is represented by the chain of command.9.8% of the total job duties described in all postings.
