This study examines differences in students' use of homebase, a common space for the high school credit system, by the type of homebase-the alcove type, the hall type, and the separated-room type. Field surveys and observational surveys were conducted in three high-schools currently operating a high school credit system in Busan. Students' homebase usage behavior was divided into static activity, dynamic activity, and interactive activity and observed during morning and afternoon recess (10 minutes) and lunch time (60 minutes). Results are as follows: (1) School A built an Alcove type homebase, providing separate space for male- and female students at both ends of the corridor. It guaranteed privacy but is far from the curriculum block. Students rarely used homebase during recesses and engaged in both interactive and individual activities during lunch hours. (2) School B built a Hall type homebase in the center of the curriculumblock. A high number of students took part in dynamic activities. Interactive activities mainly took place in public areas centered around the homebase, while static activities took place in quiet areas around the homebase. (3) School C built the Separate-room type homebase adjacent to the subject classrooms. Students mainly participated in learning activities and consulted with teachers. Static and dynamic individual activities took place in private area secured using movable furniture, while interactive activities took place at muti-sitting tables or lounge sofas.
