This paper examines the publishing activities of the Ko Je-hong family from the perspective of the genealogical expansion of publishers.
The Ko Je-hong family’s publishing activities began around 1892. Ko Yoo-sang, had been entered the publishing industry in earnest by establishing Hoedongseogwan(匯東書館) in 1907, and achieved great success. However, Hoedongseogwan lost much of its popularity after investing in the mining industry in the 1930s and experiencing great failure.
The second son, Ko Eon-sang, briefly managed Gwanghanseorim(廣韓書林) around 1917, and handed Gwanghanseorim over to Kim Cheon-hui in 1918. Later, in 1921, Ko Eon-sang managed the Gyemunsa Printing House. However, Ko Eon-sang invested in the mining industry in the 1930s and experienced great failure.
The third son, Ko Gyeong-sang, actively published various books while managing Gwangikseogwan(廣益書館) in the 1910s and 1920s and Sammunsa(三文社) in the 1930s. However, he handed over Gwangikseogwan to his nephew, Ko Byeong-don, in 1928. In the 1940s, he invested in the mining industry and experienced great failure, and Sammunsa closed down.
Ko Byeong-gyo became the president of Shinmyungseorim(新明書林) and Saebeotsa(새벗社) in 1927. And he took charge of the management of Hoedongseogwan from the late 1920s. Ko Byeong-don took over Gwangikseogwan in 1928. However, Hoedongseogwan declined significantly due to the aftermath of his father Ko Yoo-sang’s failure in investing in the mining industry, and the publishing activities of the publishing companies run by his two sons also did not well.
