The number of elderly living alone in Korea is increasing due to aging and low birth rate, and the need for housing support is increasing as they are economically vulnerable. In Seoul, community housing is being provided to support these individuals, but such housing often lacks facilities that support physical activity. Since the physical activity of elderly people is mainly accomplished through walking, the neighborhood environment of community housing is important. This study analyzed the accessibility of neighborhood facilities and the walking environment around community housing for low-income elderly living alone in Seoul. The accessibility of facilities frequently used by the elderly within a 650m radius of 11 community housing sites was generally good. However, while CCTV and street lights were adequately installed, the walking environment had a lack of pedestrian-friendly amenities, along with issues of illegal parking and obstacles. The purpose of this study is to help select locations for small-scale elderly living facilities such as community housing in the future by providing data for creating and exploring a neighborhood environment that improves the walking activities of the elderly.
