The purpose of this study is to clarify the relationship between common spaces and community formation between residents of an apartment and to suggest improvement measures in common spaces to activate community formation. According to previous studies, spatial density and the existence of shared spaces have a great impact on interaction between residents. Appropriate density promotes natural interaction between neighbors, while high density or lack of semi-private space tends to avoid interaction. The subjects of the study were residents of E-Pyeonhansesang Gwangjin Grand Park Apartment, and the questionnaire consisted of demographic characteristics, common space utilization, and community formation. Common spaces were divided into unit households, residential buildings, and residential complexes based on physical boundaries, and were divided into natural/artificial occurrence based on non-physical boundaries. The shared spaces surveyed were classified into five types. The results showed that spaces with high utilization had a positive effect on community formation. There is a positive relationship between shared space utilization and community formation, and it seems that community formation can be increased by activating spaces with low utilization but high community formation. It is believed that adding artificial occurance elements to the common space to increase its usability will have a positive effect on community formation.
