This study explored the relationship between boredom attribution and boredom coping strategy use in EFL learning by Korean university students majoring in English. Ninety-one participants responded to two questionnaires each measuring boredom attribution and boredom coping strategy use. Participants’ responses to two types of boredom attribution (i.e., being over-challenged and lack of meaning) and four types of boredom coping strategies (i.e., attention control, active reengagement, diversion to other subjects, and diversion to recreation) were subjected to bivariate correlation analysis. The results show that boredom due to lack of meaning was negatively related to the use of attention control and active reengagement strategies, while boredom due to being over-challenged was negatively related to the use of active reengagement strategies only. Theoretical and pedagogical implications of the findings are discussed.
