This study examines the patterns and transformations of attire and lifestyle during the Joseon Dynasty using advanced data mining techniques, including text mining, semantic network analysis, structural equivalence analysis, and QAP correlation analysis. Focusing on three historical periods—Early (Taejo to Seongjong), Middle (Yeonsangun to Injo), and Late (Hyojong to Gojong)—the research aims to uncover the socio-cultural significance of attire regulations and royal rituals. The analysis reveals that attire-related records are most concentrated during the reigns of Yeongjo and Gwanghaegun, reflecting periods of extended rule and significant socio-political reforms. The high frequency of attire records during these reigns suggests that attire served as a key policy tool. Conversely, reduced records during the reigns of Sukjong, Sunjo, and Cheoljong align with periods of political instability and diminished focus on attire-related policies. Text mining results highlight the centrality of attire regulations and royal rituals in maintaining social order and political authority. The Ministry of Rites (Yejo) played a critical role in implementing systematic dress codes that reinforced social hierarchies and royal authority. During the Middle period, military attire gained prominence due to political turmoil and foreign invasions, while the Late period saw the heightened regulation of ceremonial attire to assert political legitimacy. Network analysis showed an increasing density and interaction among keywords across periods, indicating an evolving complexity in attire-related discourse. Central institutions like the Ministry of Rites consistently mediated various topics, underscoring their pivotal role in shaping attire-related policies. Additionally, the Late period’s focus on diplomatic attire reflects significant cultural exchange and adaptation. This study provides a nuanced understanding of Joseon attire as both a cultural artifact and a socio-political instrument, offering insights into its role in shaping and reflecting societal structures and values. It highlights the utility of integrating computational techniques into historical attire research.
