PURPOSE : Abstract To investigate the effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on body composition, muscle strength and glycolipid metabolism in obese youth.
METHODS : 50 obese youths were randomly divided into the experimental group (n=25) and control group (n=25). The control group received 8-week dietary intervention; the experimental group received HIIT three times a week for 8 weeks on the basis of dietary intervention. HIIT including opening and closing jump, high leg lift, poppy jump, 40-second fast rope skipping, dumbbell lunges, was performed in a cycle until 80-85% of the maximum heart rate (HRmax) was reached. After 3 minutes of rest, repeated the above cycle, and then proceed the next set after 4 minutes of rest, totaling 3 sets. Body composition, muscle strength, and glycolipid metabolism were measured before and after the test in both groups.
RESULTS : There were no statistical differences in body composition, muscle strength, or glucose and lipid metabolism between the two groups before the intervention (P>0.05). After the intervention, BMI, total body fat ratio, HOMA-IR, TC, TG and LDL-C of the two groups were all lower than before, and total body muscle ratio, upper limb muscle ratio, lower limb muscle ratio and resting metabolic rate of the two groups were all higher than before (P<0.05). After the intervention, BMI, waist-to-hip ratio, total body fat ratio, visceral fat ratio, HOMA-IR, TC, TG and LDL-C of the experimental group were lower than those of the control group, and total body muscle ratio, upper limb muscle ratio, lower limb muscle ratio, resting metabolic rate, upper limb grip strength, the distance of standing long jump and the number of free-hand squat were higher than those of the control group (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONS : HIIT can be used as an effective training method for obese youth by improving body composition, muscle strength, and disorders of glycolipid metabolism.
