Amidst the crisis of Japanese colonial rule, the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea recognized t he I mjin War as a historical origin of national independence, and continued to compile history books and conduct history education that emphasized Yi Sun-sin, who repelled Japanese forces during the war. Moreover, as the Imjin War was perceived as a historical event in which Japanese invasion was repelled, this perception was reflected in various efforts by the Provisional Government — ranging from its pursuit of international recognition to school education aimed at cultivating independence activists.
A notable feature of the Provisional Government’s perception of the Imjin War is its recognition of the war as an international conflict in East Asia during the late 16th century, in which Joseon, Ming, and Japan all actively participated. This view extended beyond the immediate context of Japanese colonial rule, reflecting the argument that just as Joseon and Ming had joined forces to repel Japan during the Imjin War, the Provisional Government of Korea and the Nationalist Government of China should likewise form an alliance to counter Japanese aggression. This perception was also a countermeasure against Japan’s attempts to distort Korean history, thereby assuming the character of an important historical war within the Provisional Government’s War of Independence.
