A study was conducted on the number of regional food types appearing in the novel ‘The Burning River’, the types of food with Naju and Gwangju as the background, and the utilization of Naju delicacies, in terms of securing data for Naju food tourism. In the novel, food appears in approximately 90 pages from Part 1 to Part 9, with 82 pages (91.83%) featuring Naju and Jeollanam-do as the setting. Among the food types appearing in the novel, those with Naju as the setting accounted for 178 items, or 66.92%, while those with Gwangju as the setting accounted for 67 items, or 25.19%. Among the food types appearing in the novel with Naju as the setting, the highest proportions were found in food ingredients (39.33%), side dishes such as salted seafood (21.9%), seasonal, special, and anniversary foods (8.43%), and rice cakes (7.87%). In Gwangju, the highest proportions were found in bread and confectionery (26.87%), beverages, tea, and alcohol (16.42%), and foreign food (14.93%). The novel did not directly describe Naju’s eight famous delicacies of fish, eight famous delicacies of vegetables, or three famous delicacies. Of the fish included in Naju’s ‘Eight Delicacies of Fish’ (Eopaljinmi), three types appeared in the novel: Chinese mitten crab, carp, and eel. Of the items included in Naju’s ‘Eight Delicacies of Vegetables’ (Sopaljinmi), one type, garlic, appeared in the novel. Of the three delicacies of Naju (Naju Jinmi), eel and skate appeared in the novel. Therefore, while the novel ‘The Burning River’ had limited utility in terms of Naju’s culinary tourism, unlike Gwangju, which had a high proportion of foreign-derived foods, it had a high proportion of traditional foods from Jeolla Province, making it a valuable resource for emphasizing the region’s culinary heritage.
