The present study was to investigate the teachers' perception for cooking activity and the situation of cooking activity in kindergarten. Subjects for this study were 172 teachers of kindergarten located in DaeJeon-si and ChungNam-do. 26-item questionnaire used in this study was constructed by the researchers and then its content validity was confirmed by two experts. Collected data were analyzed by frequencies and percentiles of each item, and by χ²tests to verify the differences of teachers' perception and situation of cooking activity according to their teaching career and academic background.
Results of this study were as follows;
First, most teachers showed positive perceptions on the necessities and effects of cooking activity, and many teachers showed interest in cooing activity, for they considered cooking activity as an effective stimulus to children's interests (61.9%). However, they responded that frequencies of cooking activity actually administered in lessons were low, kindergarten curriculum and teaching materials placed small emphasis on cooking activity and didn't contain various examples of cooking activity. Lots of teachers (85.4%) favored 'to seek teaching contents and method appropriate for development' as a way for revitalizing cooking activity.
Second, many teachers positively appraised children's interest, satisfaction, participation, and performance in cooking activity. Lastly, possibility of danger (33.1%), shortage of cooking appliances (22.1%) and information (20.0%), little support from administrator (13.1%), and little interest of teachers themselves (10.3%) were selected as major factors that interfered with cooking activity.
