Turn-off semiconductor devices have vastly promoted modern power electronics during the last decade. Included are bipolar power transistors, Field Effect Transistors (MOSFETs), Gate Turn-off Thyristors (GTOs) and Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs). Additional elements are Static Induction Transistors and Thyristors (SITs and SIThs) as well as MOS Controlled Thyristors (MCTs) for higher frequency applications. The present status of semiconductor power devices is discussed including switching behavior, losses, gate driver, snubber, overcurrent and protection. The standard control is nowadays pulse width modulation. Resonant circuits are growing in importance because they allow for higher frequency, lower storage components and transformers and reduction of switching losses in semiconductor devices. Main field of application are discussed and future trends given [11].
Power electronics today is one of a wide range of well defined technologies. It has a key role in the transformation and adaptation of electrical energy between the supplier and the user. Since almost all forms of energy transformation are technically possible, further advances in the power electronics area will be increasingly determined by economic factors (compared to previous technical solutions).
Power electronics adapts electrical energy to the needs of the user. The following technical demands have therefore to be met: high efficiency, small reactive power on the AC side and small ripple on the DC side. Good controllability with high dynamic response is also required. Long device lifetime demands high reliability but the manufacture costs must be economical compared to existing solutions, where improved technical characteristics will be funded by the customers. The history of converter technology, which since the 1960's has been known as power electronics, is closely connected with electronic valves (Table 1).
