The world of Hellenism was formed after Alexander the Great(B.C.
336~323) conquered Greece and Asian regions. The way that Jews responded to Hellenism can be categorized as follows: first, the case that the Jews received the Hellenism culture with much favor, second case is that since spirit and culture of Hellenism were the ruling spirit of the times they sometimes received them without recognition, third is that they rejected the Hellenism culture regarding the obeying of Hellenism as refusing the tradition and worshipping icons. This research focuses on the second category.
The historical background of the formation of Hellenism and the world view of the Greek. The political changes of Judah influenced by Hellenism. The socio-economic changes of Judah influenced by Hellenism. The advance of the position of the levitical class who was the second-class priest(Oerus minor)
The finance of the temple was under control of the high priest, but his authority decreased after an Epjstates was sent during the Ptolemaic era.
The birth of the Gerusia, a form of Greek Congress, also restricted the au?thority of the high priest.
Under those historical circumstances, the high-priest ttied to recover his
weakened authority. Consequently, he asserted the revival of the tradition to exclude the alien influence. To accomplish this' task, a wide solidarity between the priest class and the levitical class was established. As a result, the authority of the Levites is enforced in a wide scope. The income of the Levites also increased. The firstborn animal and the first crop, which had been offered to the priests was given to the Levites.
