One of the important Korean theatre movements in the 1920s is the 'Soingeuk', or amateur theatre groups. These amateur theatres were performed actively by groups of young men or students in Seoul and in the countryside. Newspapers like 'The Chosun Ilbo' and 'The Dong-A Ilbo' reported not only the performances of professional theatre groups but also those of these amateur groups both positively and concretely.
In this paper, I investigated the methods of reportage for theatre movements and the development of their theatrical activities in the 1920s by the analyzing coverage in 'The Chosun Ilbo'. As a result of this work I confirmed that 'The Chosun Ilbo' carried theatrical articles more frequently than any other cultural events, and reported on the activity of the amateur theatre groups more than the commercial professional theatre groups. Furthermore, 'The Chosun Ilbo' featured many popular articles and illustrations pertaining to the doings of the actress and the performances of female theatre groups. These facts show that in the 1920s 'The Chosun Ilbo' had a double concern, the enlightenment of the media and the popularity of the Korean theatre movements.
I could thus identify in these Chosun Ilbo articles that Chosun Ilbo editors and the Korean public in the 1920s commonly did not differentiate between the 'Sinpageuk'(modern Korean melodrama) and the 'Singeuk'(modern Korean theatre), and recognized theatre generally as one of the important cultural institutions for public enlightenment. This view of the theatre was reproduced by media like 'The Chosun Ilbo'.
This means they regarded the theatre as a cultural institution and 'cultural capital' by which they could identify the meaning of the theatre groups' existence. The auditors participated actively in these theatrical works and responded positively to them.
