First, this article criticizes the current circumstances of the education of Korean Classical Novels in elementary school.
The most serious problem is that elementary school students can't have the opportunity to read the full text. So it is most urgent that we have to give elementary school students opportunity to read the full texts of Koeran Classical Novels.
Dualism and comparison are most frequently used techniques in teaching Korean Classical Novels. Although these techniques help students to understand stories clearly, they do not permit students to understand narratives of texts accurately and contextually.
It is necessary to systematically survey the level of comprehension ability and vocabulary acquisition of elementary school students. On the basis of the survey results, we should decide the level of text and the teaching techniques.
The scholars have to participate in deciding the method and orientation of rewriting Korean Classical Novels into comtemporary Korean.
Illustrations should be related to the storyline and story situation. It is desirable that illustrations are not concrete but abstract.
This article also speculates on the significance and orientation of the education of Korean Classical Novels in elementary school.
We have to overcome the negative prejudice against the Korean Classical Novels. By teaching Korean Classical Novels, we can give the elementary students the sensibility and philosophy of our nation. Korean Classical Novels makes people contemplate on the relation between the super world and real world. Korean Classical Novels make students think deeply and widely, because they give them the opportunities to experience the unfamiliar events.
The accidentalness has been the element which caused the negative view on Korean Classical Novels. But in the accidentalness of Korean Classical Novel, there are ethical belief that the bad people should become unhappy and the good people should become happy. In other words, the accidentalness in Korean Classical Novels is the origin of ethical hope.
In Korean culture, talking about death to children has been taboo. But ordinary life of elementary school boys and girls are related to the various kind of death. They think about death everyday, regardless of their will. So this taboo is not desirable. The Korean Classical Novels help solve these problems. Korean Classical Novels present various cases related to death. Reading Korean Classical Novels, children get acquainted with death and problems related to it. Then they can widen the sense of time across the boundaries of before-life, present life, and after-life.
Also Korean Classical Novels contain the ethics and morality of life which korean people established through their experience. So Korean Classical Novels can teach children how to live.
In conclusion, Korean Classical Novels have diverse elements which can be applied to the education of morality and literature.
The scholars of Korean classical novels have to participate actively in an effort to develope the techniques of teaching Korean Classical Novels to elementary school students.
