The compulsory service which had to be performed by the tenants for their lord in the manorial system of the Middle Ages has its origin in the gratuitous-compulsory labor of ancient slaves for their master. The reasons and evidences are as follows.
Firstly, the lord’s demesne where the tenants carried out compulsory service is fundamentally the survival of the estate directly managed by landlord on the basis of slave-labors, even though the area was largely diminished as slavery declined since the era of the Roman Empire. Secondly, we can find some evidences in the polyptychs of the ninth century and the other documentary records of the early medieval epoch that unlimited compulsory service, a characteristic of ancient slave labor, and labor rent in the form of labor service were imposed on the holding of slave, while definite corvee and rent in money or kind were imposed on the holding of freeman. Thirdly, the word ‘servitium’ which had originally had the meaning of the servile condition or the servile dependency passed through various meanings and resulted in the tenants’ compulsory services chiefly consisting of agricultural works at the time that the classic manor system based on tenants’ labor service came into existence.
Since in this manner the labor service of the tenants for their lord within the manor originates in ancient slave labor, the labor service performed by the tenants under the manorial system cannot help assuming essentially the character of slave labor.
