Institute of History and Culture introduced visual recording method in the field research on ‘Koryo Saram’ ethnic Koreans in the CIS. This paper looks back over the results with a critical eye and aims to propose the necessity for special subject repository mainly based on social or collective memory as like a visual archives for overseas Koreans.
It is very important to accumulate collective memory as cultural legacy in approach to the experience of overseas Koreans. Modern archival science suggests subject repository and documentation strategy to revitalize contextual process of human lives and to manege cultural legacies systematically.
We suggest that the special subject repository as a field of collective memory has to collect and manage various records in the form of media, letter and material information and cultural contents represent collective memory more effectively. Understanding characteristics of overseas Koreans society, a special visual archives will contribute to reveal historical truth that has been concealed, distorted and reduced.
