‘Grass’ is the most important natural object that reflects the imagery of core characteristics in Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. When we study the grass imagery in his poem, we should consider its relationship with the Bible. The Christian humanism is one of the great characteristics of Whitman’s poetry. Whitman wishes to lead individuals and society to completion by grafting Christian spirits onto politics and literature. He symbolize his poetry as a new gospel to construct a new America. Whitman encapsulates both the eternity of life and the immortality of soul by reflecting glass image in several passages in his works. He uses ‘death’, ‘Heaven’, and ‘Resurrection’ imagery to project his viewpoints on life and poetic art. He also uses farming imagery and death imagery borrowed from the Bible to deal with analogies between life and death and reveal the eternal cycle of life, death, and resurrection. He proves his belief in resurrection by juxtaposing himself with resurrected Christ. He alludes to the eternity of his art using the image of ray from an unknown sphere. He projected the eternal existence of Christ’s resurrection into his poetic art for it to be sublimated to the gospel, the whole imagery of which being transposed to construct new America. Instances of the imagery of grass, life, death, and resurrection with several allusion and ideas found in the poetry illustrate that Whitman strongly believed that his eternal and divine poetic art can recover mankind and lead individuals and society to a new “Paradise.”
