The purpose of this study is to research the Buddhist philosophy described in the heroic novel and to reveal how the Buddhist spirit acts from the aspect of the function at the structure of the epic works.
Especially the Buddhist spirit is reviewed which has its close relation with structure of epic as a history of a hero such as the birth and poverty of the hero and the combination and prosperity in a family. In this paper it is pointed out that the buddhist spirit is rather the creative technique with epic function than motive.
It is true that a social idea in Chosun Dynasty, where a heroic novel existed, regarded Confucian ideas as a best philosophy. Their ambition was reflected through the history of a hero. The limit as a man had to be recognized. The only way to overcome the limit world as a epic device could not help accepting the religious mind of a man. In the course of developing the life of a hero, the Buddhist spirit was used such as transigrationism, miracle philosophy and karma. These techniques come to be practised and are served as a device of novel which is in charge of certain function in the structure of epic.
