Many people dissatisfied with the school system are actively seeking alternatives to the school education. Over the last few years, homeschooling has come into being as an alternative education in Korea. The purpose of this study is to explore the current status of homeschooling in Korea and make some suggestions. Survey questionnaires including the demographic information of homeschooling families, the reasons they select this type of education, the curriculum and the materials they use, the difficulties they face are developed. Fifty four subjects participate in this study. Findings show that homeschooling families are largely middle-class, most of them have college education and in the latter half of thirties. Average number of children in the household is two children. Reasons for homeschooling include religious concern, academic concern and harmful school environments. Majority families design their own curriculum and buy pre-packaged products in homeschooling malls. Mothers tend to be in charge of homeschooling and children regularly study for about 3 hours a day. The major subjects they study are English and the Bible. Most homeschoolers participate in the support groups for information. Homeschooling families also prefer to send their children abroad for colleges. Homeschoolers experience some difficulties such as time management, tension, and illegal status of homeschooling. However, the parents believe that homeschooling provides their children with moral and religious values and bring families closer together. They request the government to support homeschooling including legality of homeschooling and financial support. Government, Christian organizations, and churches need to find the ways to support homeschooling to succeed in settlement of homeschooling.
