Generally J. A. Comenius is known as an theologist of education or a scholar of didactics. It is, however, necessary to understand that Comenius as a scholar of pedagogy and didactics cannot be fully understood without knowing the fact that his pedagogy came from his thorough theological background and that he pursued the applicable theology or practical theology, not speculative theology. Furthermore it is also necessary to reveal that he was a practical theologist and at the same time his theology was based on eschatology and that the motive for his pedagogy had a view of eschatology. Naturally it had a limit to annalize his thought and educational practice when his theological background was restricted to the eschatological view. But it is evident that eschatology was the core of his theology and that his thought of eschatological theology was closely tied up with his educational thought and commitment. All of this can be confirmed with his views about apocalyptic characteristics and the millennium. So this paper takes two steps of proving that Comenius' educational thought was based on his theology, and his theology had the characteristics of eschatological theology. The first step is to get the answer in the frame of apocalyptic, millenarian, and practical eschatologies, to the question: 'what meaning can we get from the fact that the theological thought of Comenius as a practical theologist was founded on eschatology?' The second step is to pick up three motives: that of mission life, that of patience and holiness, and that of practice and responsibility, and then to prove how his eschatological characteristics can have an effect on today's education. All this procedure is to suggest 'what a person can get a significant meaning concerning his own existence with' and 'how a person can fully accomplish becoming his own self.' Comenius was totally free from and unoccupied with any canon or theology. He was spiritually open to any frame except the Bible. This is why I expect that the eschatological thought and life of Comenius can offer answers to the fundamental questions of life that Christians of our age are asking.
