Representative form as well as content is an important factor to characterize history textbook. This study investigate forms of historical representation, and analyze ones in Korean history textbook of high school. I expect to find some suggestions for effective writing and representing contents of history textbook.
Historian represent historical facts to transmit his message to readers. Historian who represent historical facts is a sort of writer in this sense. Writer's awareness and view, his judgement concerning transmitting method, and expectation to readers are connoted in historical representation. And historical representation is a instrument for understanding history. Readers accept historical meaning through reconstructing represented historical facts.
Forms of historical representation can be divided into literal writing and non-literal representation. Visual material is frequently utilized in non-literal representation.
What is utilized in historical representation principally is literal writing. Forms of historical representation by literal writing can be grouped into sequential writing, expository writing, interpretative writing and value judgmental writing. Sequential writings are sub-grouped into narrative and chronological one. Cause and effect relation, comparison and exemplification are main techniques for expository writing.
Most of non-literal material have been utilized as supplementary ones of literal writing. But nowadays relative importance of non-literal material as the instrument of historical representation has been getting more and more. Non-literal material can be interpreted more various than literal writing usually, and often involve popular culture. The most type of non-literal materials for representing historical facts is visual one. Visual materials can divided into imagery, expository, exemplary and interpretative one according to the skill of historical understanding. Photograph and picture are usually utilized as imagery material, but often as expository one. History map has the skill of material to be exposited or interpreted. Time line has the interpretative skill, but is generally utilized with other material to obtain significant interpretation. Historical record is a typical sort of interpretative material, but is utilized to exemplify contents according to circumstances.
There can be found many sequential and expository writings in Korean history textbook. But value judgmental or interpretative writing is not able to be found frequently. Most of sequential writings are chronological, but narrative is few. Many of expository writings in Korean history textbook involve causal and effective relation. And comparison is a technique to be frequently employed in expository writing. Enumerative writings are often seen, and utilized as exemplifying material in certain circumstances. There is few value judgmental writing in Korean history textbooks. But history of foreign relations is often written with the form of value judgmental writing. Most of value judgments are represented through emotional terms. Korean history textbook has few interpretative writings, which are partly seen in history of foreign relation such as the national movement. In other field of history, we can find partly interpretative writings which signify specific facts only.
Visual materials in Korean history textbook can be classified into three types of presentations according to their function. One is the material with a view of only visual effect. Picture of cover and most of figure photographs in Korean history textbook can be classified into this type of presentation. Another is the visual material with the function of exposition. This type of presentation, for example history map or chart, usually fulfill its function of supplying body contents of textbook. Data in this type of representation can be utilized as material to comprehend or interpret history. But this type of materials in Korean history textbook can seldom function so in reality. A few materials seem to exemplify body contents, but it is common that this exemplification is perfunctory. Occasionally, there can be seen materials with organizing body contents visually. The other is the material which contains contents worth being learned by pupils. For example, many statistics in Korean history textbook belong to this type of presentation.
