Beckett's novels and dramas deal with the diminished and reduced human condition. Man is the victim of destructive time, so his body and mind decline as time goes by. Beckett has the pessimistic viewpoint that man is destined to encounter with death. When a man is born, his body begins to disintegrate and to move toward death. But life goes on in the form of repetition during this decline. There is nothing new under the sun in Beckett's universe. All characters are embedded in their habits and reiterate their repetitive actions during this reductive process. They struggle to escape from their habits, but they are also habits. Estragon and Vladimir wait today, as they did yesterday. Hamm and Clov begin another 'endgame' as the curtain draws up. Winnie tries to create another 'happy' day like earlier days. They go on to repeat with some variations what they did yesterday.
Repetition in Beckett's works is closely related with 'nothing' rather than 'something'. Beckett's main concern is about nothing. Nothing cannot be named in our language, so Beckett compares it to 'the ideal core of the onion.' In Beckett's works, nothing takes a concrete shape through the drama of absence, the drama of 'nothing happens.' Nothing is revealed in the repetition of silence or in the frequent use of the negative sentences such as 'nothing to done', 'there is nothing to show', etc. Especially silence permeates every corner of the Beckett's world and shows that Beckett's world is dominated and overshadowed by absence or nothing. Absence takes a tangible and concrete form in waiting. Waiting is a typical repetitive action in Beckett's works. It is not a unique and meaningful action, but the repetition of the previous action and the anticipation of the future action. It is split between the past and the future. While Beckett's heroes are waiting, we can experience the absence of Godot, of meaning, and of the absolute, etc.
